In the early 1800s, Tansley was part of the Parish of Crich and did not have a church of its own, although there was a Methodist Church in the village. The people of Tansley were tired of trudging to Crich for Sunday services so in 1839 they had begun raising money for a chapel of their own and building started.
Stone was transported from the local Fox Holes and Knowle quarries at a cost of Is Od (Sp) for a one horse cart and man and Is 8d (8p) for a two horse cart and man. The chapel, still part of the Parish of Crich was opened the following year in 1840 and in 1844 the Parish of Tansley was formed
By the 1860s many hydropathic establishments had been established in Matlock and Tansley resulting in an influx of visitors “taking the waters” and a need to enlarge the church. This was done in 1870 with the addition of the North aisle and the replacement of the original box pews with the current pews.
Over the years Holy Trinity has had to adapt to changes in demand so in 1997 the North aisle was stripped of its pews and converted into a socialising area with toilet and kitchen where meetings, Parish breakfast, cuppa-call-in and many other activities are held.
